NPT’s ‘Learning to Read’ family workshops go virtual on Aug. 5

At Home Learning with NPT

NPT’s family literacy workshops are moving online in order to observe pandemic protocols. Our Learning to Read: At Home family literacy videos are designed for children up to 10 years old – and their guardians – and will premiere on Facebook Wednesdays at 10 a.m. beginning Aug. 5. Click here for this week’s video.

Four of the Learning to Read: At Home videos will be bilingual story times in English and Spanish with Nashville singer-songwriter Rachel Rodriguez and will include a music component. Three of the videos will include STEM-based activities developed by retired science and STEM educator Sharon Mendonsa, a former Adventure Science Center educator who has co-led NPT’s educational workshops for the past six years. A final set of Learning to Read: At Home videos feature crafts and creative literacy games for the entire family to enjoy.

In the first virtual workshop, Rodriguez – whose story was told in NPT’s Next Door Neighbors: Music City USA – reads Dolly Parton’s The Colors of the Rainbow, teaches children colors in Spanish and performs two songs with lyrics in English and Spanish.

The Learning to Read: At Home series continues each week through Sept. 30. A free printable activity will be available for the STEM- and STEAM-based videos, along with exciting PBS literacy resources for children, guardians and educators. These materials will be available to download here on the NPT blog.

NPT’s Learning to Read: At Home family workshop series is sponsored by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation.
