TONIGHT: HIP-HOP BEYOND BEATS AND RHYMES

Byron Hurt

We’ve written about this a few times in the last few weeks. Tonight at 11 p.m. on NPT-Channel 8, the time has finally arrived for Independent Lens: Hip-Hop, Beyond Beats and Rhymes, Byron Hurt’s film that was a sensation when it played at the Nashville Film Festival last year. Hurt takes an in-depth look at rap music and hip-hop culture — where creative genius, poetic beauty and mad beats collide with misogyny, violence and homophobia. The film includes interviews with some of America’s top rappers, producers and commentators, including Busta Rhymes, Russell Simmons and Sarah Jones.

Terrence Howard, who explored the struggles of making a career in Hip Hop in Hustle & Flow, hosts and Entertainment Weekly has a great interview with the actor about the episode.

The episode has made the best bets in a number of publications, including the Week, O, the Kansas City Star and the Press of Atlantic City.

You can watch a preview of the show on the Independent Lens website.
