Thanks to all who came to the Nashville Public Library in Downtown on Saturday, September 15, to preview Ken Burns’ THE WAR and learn about the Veteran’s History Project. We hope you enjoyed it. Special thanks to the Library for hosting it.

Ken Burns’ THE WAR explores the history and horror of WWII from an American perspective, reminding viewers that in extraordinary times, there are no ordinary lives. The film focuses on a handful of men and women from four American towns, but could have aimed its camera at any town in America for deeply personal stories about WWII.

Nashville Public Television (NPT) has created a place on its website for people in the Nashville area to tell their own stories about WWII. Submitted stories can reflect on life in the home front or on the battlefield. To submit stories and photos, visit http://www.wnpt.net/thewar and use the simple form to share its memories. Stories will be collected until May 31, 2008.

Visitors can also browse or search for other stories about the war from fellow members of the Nashville community and from around the country. Videos, original photos, original letters and more can also be sent to the Library of Congress Veterans History Project at http://www.loc.gov/vets/kit.html.

“We anticipate that Ken Burns’ THE WAR will open up a local and national dialogue about WWII that will continue long after its initial broadcast,” said Beth Curley, President and CEO of NPT. “The Second World War affected everyone alive at the time, and we continue to learn and be moved – sometimes inspired, sometimes horrified – by the stories of those that were there. Over sixty years later, it’s more important than ever that these stories continue to be told and preserved. We’re pleased to provide our community a way to do that.”

NPT will follow Ken Burns’ THE WAR with its own local production, Nashville WWII Stories, in December 2007.
