CIVIL LIBERTIES AND RAPE IN THE MILITARY LEAD TOPICS TONIGHT ON BILL MOYERS JOURNAL AND NOW

Tonight on Bill Moyers Journal (NPT-Channel 8 at 8:00 p.m.), Moyers interviews executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union Anthony D. Romero and former Republican Congressman Mickey Edwards about new legislation expanding the government’s domestic surveillance program.

Plus, Jack Goldsmith, former head the Office of Legal Counsel at the Justice Department and author of the new book The Terror Presidency, gives an insider’s view of advising the President on the limits of executive power during the war on terror.

As proposed new rules may allow coal companies to expand mountain top removal mining, Bill Moyer’s Journal takes viewers to the mountains of West Virginia — stripped for their coal with often disastrous environmental consequences for surrounding communities — to report on local evangelical Christians who are turning to their faith to help save the earth.

At 9:30 p.m. NOW investigates rape and assault — by fellow soldiers — of women in the U.S. Military. Roughly one in seven of America’s active duty military soldiers is a woman, but a NOW investigation found that sexual assault and rape is widespread. One study of National Guard and Reserve forces found that almost one in four women had been assaulted or raped. Last year alone, almost 3,000 soldiers reported sexual assault and rape by other soldiers. In tonight’s episode, NOW features women who speak out for the first time about what happened, meeting women courageously battling to overcome their MST (military sexual trauma) and bring light to an issue that’s putting the army in shame. It’s a NOW exclusive investigation.
