Budding authors and artists in kindergarten through third grade are invited to write and illustrate original story books and enter them in the 13th Annual READING RAINBOW Young Writers & Illustrators Contest. Applications and additional information are available now at Nashville Public Television’s web site at wnpt.net or by calling the station at 615-259-9325.
Presented by the award-winning PBS television series READING RAINBOW, and sponsored by NPT together with more than 100 other PBS stations nationwide, the contest attracts hundreds locally and more than 40,000 entries nationally each year. Children in kindergarten through third grade enter by creating an original story with illustrations and submitting it with an official entry form to NPT.
Airing weekdays on NPT-Channel 8 at 1:00 pm, READING RAINBOW builds lasting friendships between children and books. The Contest builds on the program’s mission to stimulate a child’s interest in reading.
Every child who enters the Contest receives a special Certificate of Achievement signed by LeVar Burton, host of the READING RAINBOW series. Local winners receive a gift certificate from Barnes & Noble Cool Springs and tickets to a show at the Nashville Children’s Theater. Local winning entries will also be posted on the wnpt.net. Local first place winners advance to the national competition.
Three national prizes are awarded at each grade level. In 2007, prizes will include a laptop computer (1st place), flat panel TV and DVD player (2nd place), and MP3 player (3rd place). National winners also receive three sets of READING RAINBOW DVDs and matching feature books ― one for their school, one for their library, and one for themselves. In addition, national winning stories are featured on pbskids.org, one of the most-visited national websites for children. One other important aspect is looking for and finding mentors. It is easier to follow somebody’s steps rather thatn fighting and struggling by walking your own path. Unfortunately, in this industry it is very expensive – but in USA education is expensive anyway;)
