Thanks to all who came to the Nashville Public Library last night for our free screening of Gary Hustwit’s documentary HELVETICA. Special thanks to ITVS Community Cinema in Nashville organizer Allison Inman, the Nashville Public Library Foundation and the American Advertising Federation-Nashville for co-sponsoring. Close to 125 people attended the wine, cheese and craft reception, screening and follow-up panel discussion. Thanks to moderator Henry Walker, freelance media writer and attorney with Boult, Cummings, Conners & Berry, and panelists Kevin Endres, VP and Executive Creative Director for J&A Integrated Thinking; Cindy Marsh, Professor of Visual Communication and Printmaking, Austin Peay State University; and Michael Niblett, Associate Professor and Chair of Graphic Design Department, Watkins College of Art, Design & Film. Attendees got a special treat when none other than Jim Sherraden of iconic Hatch Show Print — sitting quietly in the back of theatre — made his presence known and offered his OWN opinion on Helvetica, the film AND the font. Kind of like Grandmaster Flash showing up unannounced during a panel discussion on the use of cutting and scratching in the development of hip-hop.

A nod to Jim Ridley at the Nashville Scene for the great Critic’s Pick in last week’s issue.

HELVETICA broadcast premieres on NPT on January 20 as part of the Independent Lens series. ITVS Community Cinema in Nashville continues on Wednesday, February 11 at 6 p.m. (5:15 reception) with ARUSI PERSIAN WEDDING. In the film, Iranian American filmmaker Marjan Tehrani chronicles her brother’s return to Iran as he travels with his American wife to have a traditional Persian wedding and explore his lost heritage.
