NPT’s free ‘Finding Your Roots’ virtual events

Join NPT for two free virtual genealogy workshops inspired by Finding Your Roots. These free events take place April 13 and 20 and will include a screening selected from the seventh season of Finding Your Roots, along with discussions and tips provided by local historians and a genealogist from the show. Participants will also be encouraged to select a personal object through which they can research their personal family history.

Descriptions of the events follow. These virtual events are free, but RSVPs are required.

Part 1: Tuesday, April 13, at noon

NPT’s Finding Your Roots events begin with a virtual screening featuring a clip from the series’ seventh season and a panel discussion about how people can begin to access their own ancestry. Brigette Jones, curator of social history at the Tennessee State Museum, will moderate the discussion with Taneya Y. Koonce, president of the Nashville chapter of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society; Nick Sheedy, Finding Your Roots’ lead genealogist; and Daniel J. Sharfstein, professor of history, Vanderbilt School of Law.

This panel discussion may be recorded and posted to NPT’s Learning Media page, website and/or social media.

Part 2: Tuesday, April 20, 5:30 – 7 p.m.

NPT’s second Finding Your Roots workshop will be a virtual discussion led by Taneya Y. Koonce, president of the Nashville chapter of Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society. For this workshop, participants will be asked to identify one object or document through which to investigate and share their own family history. The workshop will also include tips on finding resources, organizing and preserving family artifacts, and finding clues from objects that may lead to further investigations into personal ancestries.

Participants may also opt to receive a mailed packet of charts and documents designed for those beginning their genealogy for the first time.

This discussion may be recorded and posted to NPT’s Learning Media page, website and/or social media.

The seventh season of Finding Your Roots, the celebrity genealogy series featuring Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr., continues on NPT Tuesdays at 7 p.m. through May 4, and is also available to stream at video.wnpt.org.

Corporate support for Finding Your Roots With Henry Louis Gates Jr., Season Seven, is provided by Ancestry and Johnson & Johnson.
