Gardening is among the pastimes that enjoyed an uptick in popularity as we took to our homes to wait out the pandemic. NPT’s Volunteer Gardener: Maximizing Plant Potential, a one-hour special filled with tips for gardeners of all levels, premieres Thursday, June 11, at 7:30 p.m. Volunteer Gardener presenters Troy Marden and Tammy Algood host the show. Volunteer Gardener: Maximizing Plant Potential will also air Sunday, June 14, at 9 a.m.

“Instead of doing a Gardening 101, I decided on a different approach for a wider appeal,” said Volunteer Gardener producer Greta Requierme. “I’ve been gardening for 15 years and I’m always learning. I combined that notion with the fact that people are spending money and time in the hopes of growing something. My goal is for people to get a satisfactory return on that investment.”

Topics covered in the show include: planting in raised beds; harvesting and preserving herbs; and making your own soil mix. “Golden Rules of Gardening,” as Requierme calls them, are included throughout, presented as advice from the segment hosts.

And here’s an encouraging thought from the iconic Audrey Hepburn, by way of Volunteer Gardener’s Phillipe Chadwick: To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow. That’s something to keep in mind during challenging times in your garden and beyond.

Volunteer Gardener airs Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 9:30 a.m. on NPT. Segments from the show are also available at video.wnpt.org/show/volunteer-gardener and on YouTube.
