Wherever you go in Caldwell Elementary school, there are words of wit, wisdom and inspiration — in the gym, “26 Laps = 1 Mile: No Child Left on Their Behind” — encouraging students to not only be physically active, but to always be reading. That’s why it made the perfect place for local children’s literacy organization Book’em to hold its Read Me Day today, Friday, Feb. 26. Co-Chaired by NPT’s Kathy Edson and Nissan North America’s Judi Hartbarger, it was a fantastic morning, and the perfect cap to Read Me Week 2010. Reading to the students today were Mayor Karl Dean, along with Rebecca Ward, her dog scooter, and mascot Gnash from the Nashville Predators, Titans cheerleader Julia Nicholson, our broadcast friends Christine Maddela from WKRN and Scott Couch from Fox17, Miss Black Tennessee LaDonna Boyd, our own Beth Curley and Kevin Crane and dozens more. Award-winning children’s songwriter, entertainer and NPT superstar Farmer Jason served as celebrity sponsor and put in a rousing show. He even came up with an on-the-spot verse and rhyme for “aardvark.” (“Yard art” if you’re wondering).

Each student received a new book as part of the day’s activities. Comcast taped some of the guest readers, including Dean, Curley, Boyd, Charles Davis and Alex Meister from Nashville Ballet, and will make them available On Demand.
