Profile of the Amazon Defense Front’s case against Chevron/Texaco, and the Front’s legal coordinator Pablo Fajardo, is third winner of Nashville Public Television Award.

Nashville Public Television (NPT) has chosen CRUDE, a documentary film by director Joe Berlinger, as the 2009 recipient of its NPT Human Spirit Award at the 2009 Nashville Film Festival.

The NPT Human Spirit Award, presented each year by NPT to a Nashville Film Festival selection, acknowledges a filmmaker’s work that best explores and captures the human spirit. The film must illuminate in a high artistic manner the important characteristics of what it means to be human: generosity, kindness, mercy, compassion, fortitude and honor. The award will be presented to Berlinger prior to the Sunday, April 19, 4:30 p.m. Nashville Film Festival screening of CRUDE at Regal Green Hills Cinemas.

The NPT Human Spirit Award Committee is Kevin Crane, VP of programming and technology; Justin Harvey, program manager; and Brian O’Neill, director of brand management and creative services.

“Berlinger’s film is no mere work of advocacy,” said the NPT Human Spirit Award Committee in a joint statement. “It explores how complex it can be to find simple solutions to the issues surrounding our environment, especially when juggling the many tangled emotional, financial and cultural investments of the various entities involved. Ultimately, it is the story of Pablo Fajardo, and a fascinating study of the power of the human spirit delivered in riveting detail.”

Three years in the making, CRUDE, the cinéma-vérité feature from acclaimed filmmaker Berlinger (Brother’s Keeper, Paradise Lost – screening in the Sinking Creek retrospective at NaFF 2009 – and Metallica: Some Kind of Monster) is the epic story of one of the largest and most controversial legal cases on the planet. Pablo Fajardo, an Ecuadorian native and the legal coordinator for the Amazon Defense Front, has made the case his life’s mission, An inside look at the infamous $27 billion “Amazon Chernobyl” case, CRUDE is a real-life high stakes legal drama set against a backdrop of the environmental movement, global politics, celebrity activism, human rights advocacy, the media, multinational corporate power, and rapidly-disappearing indigenous cultures. Presenting a complex situation from multiple viewpoints, the film subverts the conventions of advocacy filmmaking as it examines a complicated situation from all angles while bringing an important story of environmental peril and human suffering into focus.

The NPT Human Spirit Award comes with a cash prize and Nashville Public Television’s intention to broadcast the film so that others may celebrate the generous role that great filmmaking plays in our lives. Previous winners of the NPT Human Spirit Award are SONS OF LWALA (2008) and THE CLINTON 12 (2008).

The 40th Nashville Film Festival takes place April 16-23, 2009 at the Regal Green Hills Cinemas.
