NPT to Host Live Discussion on English Language Referendum

Moderated by John Seigenthaler, PERSPECTIVES: THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE REFERENDUM explores issues for and against ratification

Davidson County voters go to the polls on January 22 to vote for or against ratifying a controversial English language amendment that proponents call “English-first” and opponents call “English-only.” Viewers for and against the amendment will have a chance to better understand its nuances, and call in with their own questions, when moderator John Seigenthaler hosts Perspectives: The English Language Referendum, a half-hour show live from Nashville Public Television’s Studio A this Friday night, January 16, at 7:00 p.m. CT on NPT.

Nashville attorney David Briley, a representative for Nashville For All Of Us, a broad coalition opposed to ratifying the amendment, will defend his position. The amendment’s author, Eric Crafton, Metro councilmember District 22, though initially scheduled to represent those who support it, has since confirmed that he will not appear on the show. Should councilmember Crafton reconsider, he will be welcomed, according to producer Justin Harvey.

A video detailing the potential impact of ratifying the English language amendment will serve as an introduction to the panel discussion. The video will also be available, in advance of the broadcast, at the NPT Media Update blog (http://www.npt08.wordpress.com) at 10:00 a.m. CT, Friday, January 16.
