That’s what Anthony Tommasini suggests in his New York Times review of the Metropolitan Opera’s production of Mozart’s Magic Flute, which airs as Great Performances at the Met: Mozart’s The Magic Flute, on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 8:00-10:00 p.m. on NPT-Channel 8.
“Children were everywhere, a rare sight at the venerable institution,” writes Tommasini. “They were having pictures taken in front of the house, dashing up and down the stairs of the Grand Promenade and, before long, sitting up in their seats all over the auditorium.”
“…the Met went all out…the cast was excellent…” adds Tommasini of the production, where dancing bears, flying birds, and even a giant serpent are all brought vividly to life through celebrated director Julie Taymor’s ingenious use of puppetry. James Levine conducts.
