Earlier this month, we laid to rest a true Nashville giant. John Seigenthaler\u00a0<\/strong>was many things, among them a journalist and First Amendment advocate, but as we wrote in a statement posted<\/a> on Friday, July 11, to us he was a friend, a member of the NPT family and the longtime volunteer host \u2014\u00a0for 42\u00a0years \u2014\u00a0of\u00a0A Word on Words<\/em>. We will pay\u00a0tribute to that legacy, and celebrate what would have been Seigenthaler’s 87th birthday, on Sunday, July 27 from 2-6 p.m.<\/strong> on NPT. We’ll be airing back-to-back classic episodes of the show, interspersed with reflections and stories from local authors and friends. Among the authors and episodes featured\u00a0will be\u00a0John Lewis<\/strong> (\u201cWalking with the Wind\u201d); Ann Patchett<\/strong> (\u201cPatron Saint of Liars\u201d); Alice Randall<\/strong> (\u201cThe Wind Done Gone\u201d); J.T. Ellison<\/strong> (\u201cAll the Pretty Girls\u201d);\u00a0John M. Seigenthaler<\/strong> (\u201cJames K. Polk\u201d); David Halberstam<\/strong> (\u201cFirehouse\u201d); Rodney Crowell\u00a0<\/strong>(\u201cChinaberry Sidewalks\u201d); and Fred Thompson<\/strong>\u00a0(\u201cTeaching the Pig to Dance\u201d).<\/p>\n

Among those offering reflections\u00a0are\u00a0Stephen Mansfield<\/strong>, Ellison, Jon Meacham<\/strong>, Charles McNair<\/strong>, Crowell, Marty Stuart<\/strong>, Adam Ross <\/strong>and\u00a0Randall.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That morning’s regularly scheduled episode at 10:30 a.m. features Patchett in a new episode talking about her most recent collection of essays, “This is the Story of a Happy Marriage.” All new episodes, taped in the months before Seigenthaler’s death, will air on subsequent Sunday mornings until September 28, after which older episodes will be rebroadcast, until further notice.<\/p>\n
