We’re excited to announce today that Kathy Mattea<\/strong><\/a>, the\u00a0Grammy and CMA Award-winning singer-songwriter and\u00a0advocate for a number of causes, including AIDS awareness and\u00a0research, global warming and Appalachian mining practices, will\u00a0host a new series focused on\u00a0the issues that surround an increasing older population. The\u00a0series, \u201cNPT Reports: Aging Matters,\u201d premieres on Thursday,\u00a0September 12, 2013 at 8:00 p.m. on NPT with \u201cEnd of Life,\u201d an episode\u00a0exploring the difficult though important topic of end-of life-care.<\/p>\n

Mattea, who released\u00a0Calling Me Home<\/strong><\/em>, an exploration of the music of her native Appalachia,\u00a0in the fall of 2012 on Sugar Hill Records<\/a>,\u00a0will introduce and close each episode, providing context from a trusted voice in the community,\u00a0and from someone who herself has had experience with caring for the elderly. Her song \u201cWhere\u2019ve You Been,\u201d co-written by her husband Jon Vezner,\u00a0earned her a Grammy in 1990 for Best Female Country Vocal Performance and has become a\u00a0source of strength for families of loved ones with Alzheimer’s.<\/p>\n

Twice named Female Vocalist of the Year by the Country Music Association, West Virginia-native Mattea\u00a0carved out a role for herself in the late 1980s and 1990s as a sensitive yet energetic artist at ease both\u00a0with country tradition and free-ranging innovation. With close to thirty Top 40 country hits, including\u00a015 Top 10s and 4 Number Ones, five gold albums and a platinum-selling greatest hits compilation, she is\u00a0among the most successful women in the genre\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

NASHVILLE, Tennessee \u2013 August 22, 2013 — Kathy Mattea<\/strong>, the\u00a0Grammy and CMA Award-winning singer-songwriter and\u00a0advocate for a number of causes, including AIDS awareness and\u00a0research, global warming and Appalachian mining practices, will\u00a0host a new Nashville Public Television (NPT) series focused on\u00a0the issues that surround an increasing older population. The\u00a0series, \u201cNPT Reports: Aging Matters,\u201d premieres on Thursday,\u00a0September 12, 2013 at 8:00 p.m. on NPT with \u201cEnd of Life,\u201d an episode\u00a0exploring the difficult though important topic of end-of life-care. A national version will be distributed through American Public Television (APT)<\/a> later this year.<\/p>\n

Following in the footsteps of NPT\u2019s previous two multi-year,\u00a0socially engaged and award-winning projects, \u201cNext Door\u00a0Neighbors\u201d and \u201cNPT Reports: Children\u2019s Health Crisis.\u201d \u201cNPT\u00a0Reports: Aging Matters\u201d is a major multi-year initiative designed to open a community-based\u00a0conversation about what Middle Tennessee’s older citizens need to optimize their quality of life and\u00a0what the community needs to do to prepare for a coming explosion in our aging population. Over a\u00a0three to five year period NPT will focus on these issues — caregiving, finances, end-of-life issues,\u00a0dementia and Alzheimer\u2019s among them — through at least six documentaries, televised town hall or\u00a0panel discussions, \u201cAging Matters\u201d updates, community engagement conversations, a project website,\u00a0interactive OVEE screenings and DVD distribution.\u00a0\u201cChildren\u2019s Health\u2019s Crisis\u201d shared a wealth of information with the community, and proved there was\u00a0an interest in extensive in-depth coverage of issues affecting Middle Tennessee,\u201d said Beth Curley,\u00a0president and CEO of NPT. \u201cAs a generation ages, they and those that care for them — both personally\u00a0and institutionally — will have important decisions to make. Now is the time to be informed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mattea will introduce and close each episode, providing context from a trusted voice in the community,\u00a0and from someone who herself has had experience with caring for the elderly. Her late mother Ruth and\u00a0two of her aunts had Alzheimer\u2019s. It\u2019s that personal connection that led Mattea to lend her name, voice\u00a0and image to the Alzheimer\u2019s Association and to Abe\u2019s Garden, a non-profit Alzheimer\u2019s and dementia\u00a0care facility planned in Nashville. Her song \u201cWhere\u2019ve You Been,\u201d co-written by her husband Jon Vezner,\u00a0earned her a Grammy in 1990 for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. The song has become a\u00a0source of strength for families of loved ones with Alzheimer’s.<\/p>\n
