It is now also the official holiday song of the state of Tennessee. But Brenda Lee is also known for hits spanning the rock, pop, country, and rockabilly music genres. Discover the story behind Lee\u2019s iconic songs and explore how her early life in poverty and childhood stardom shaped her artistry and rise to be one of the biggest female music acts in history in the new documentary <strong>Brenda Lee: Rockin\u2019 Around<\/strong>, premiering Thursday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m. on Nashville PBS with encore broadcasts Saturday, Dec. 7, at 8 and 11 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"580\" height=\"327\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wi61r1PdDXg?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent&#038;listType=playlist&#038;list=PLzkQfVIJun2Lz2Mb4MVN7CayVAyShpb7l\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The national broadcast premiere of the <strong>American Masters<\/strong> documentary is Monday, December 16 at 10 p.m. CST on PBS stations around the country. The film is also available on the PBS app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Featuring archival footage and stills, performance clips, and interviews with Lee herself, <strong>Brenda Lee: Rockin\u2019 Around<\/strong> details how the \u201cI\u2019m Sorry\u201d singer helped pull her family out of poverty in rural Georgia with her knockout vocal talents, ultimately becoming one of the leading female headlining acts in music. The star-studded film also features interviews with country artists Keith Urban, Tanya Tucker, and Trisha Yearwood, as well as singer-songwriter Pat Benatar, music producer Neil Giraldo, and beloved radio personality Shotgun Tom Kelly, host of SiriusXM 60s Gold radio show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born in the charity ward of Atlanta\u2019s Emory University Hospital, by the age of 10 Lee was belting out country songs in a voice that belied her age and tiny stature and she quickly became a musical sensation. Her determination and shining talents led her to career highlights including popular radio hits \u201cSweet Nothin\u2019s\u201d and \u201cBreak It to Me Gently,\u201d memorable friendships with fellow music titans Patsy Cline and Elvis Presley, and even working with the Beatles as her opening act in Hamburg, Germany, in 1962.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee\u2019s prolific artistry has been celebrated in the music world over the past six decades. She holds the distinction as the first woman to be inducted into both the Rock \u2018n\u2019 Roll Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame and is also an esteemed member of the Pop Music Hall of Fame and Rockabilly Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her lasting impact is especially evident to contemporary audiences every holiday season with the iconic song \u201cRockin\u2019 Around the Christmas Tree,\u201d which rose to popularity when it was featured in the 1990 Christmas classic <em>Home Alone <\/em>starring Macaulay Culkin. The song is a mainstay on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during the month of December, and in 2023 it topped the Hot 100 for the first time, making Lee, at 79 years old, the oldest artist to reach number one in the chart\u2019s history and one of the \u201cQueens of Christmas\u201d along with Mariah Carey. Most recently, an AI-generated Spanish-language version of the track, \u201cNoche Buena y Navidad,\u201d has expanded the song\u2019s reach to even more audiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee\u2019s impact on musicians across several genres, including pop, hip-hop, soul, and R&amp;B, is reflected in the works of many artists like Prince, Kanye West, Elton John, and Taylor Swift \u2013 with the latter previously stating that Lee is \u201cthe singer who mastered the sound of heartbreak.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brenda Lee: Rockin\u2019 Around<\/strong> is a production of Nashville PBS in association with TH Entertainment LLC and American Masters Pictures. Emmy-nominated documentary filmmaker Barbara Hall is producer and director. Hall is also the creative force behind <strong>American Masters<\/strong> films <em>Charley Pride: I\u2019m Just Me <\/em>and <em>Patsy Cline: American Masters, <\/em>as well as the <strong>Great Performances<\/strong><em> <\/em>tribute <em>Patsy Cline: Walkin\u2019 After Midnight<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve celebrated many legendary artists throughout my career, and I\u2019m thrilled to continue this love for our music greats with <strong>Brenda Lee: Rockin\u2019 Around<\/strong>,\u201d said Hall. \u201c<strong>Brenda Lee <\/strong>has been shaking up the music industry for decades.
