The series of 20 short videos are being produced by NPT associate producer Shawn Anfinson as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wnpt.org\/american-graduate\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\">American Graduate: Let\u2019s Make it Happen<\/a> initiative supporting community-based solutions to the dropout crisis.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nptinternal.org\/nptreports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/american_graduate.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-159\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nptinternal.org\/nptreports\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/american_graduate.jpg\" alt=\"american graduate\" width=\"150\" height=\"73\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The \u201cStudent Voices\u201d videos are available on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLs4r0o-fAOUhII5V4qoK9dmF1kE-jaG6B\" target=\"_blank\">NPT\u2019s YouTube channel.<\/a> We\u2019ll also spotlight one video each week on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/nashvillepublictelevision\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/npt8\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Anfinson meets one-on-one with perspective students \u2013 identified with the help of school administrators and teachers \u2013 to discuss his goals for the videos, then has follow-up meetings to film the students. \u201cIt\u2019s a mistake to lump every at-risk kid into the same category,\u201d Anfinson said. The problems they face are as individual as they are.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nCWX7Pe9pvg\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In one video, a teen talks about juggling a 30-hour workweek, school and fatherhood. In another, a teen\u2019s career choice is an inspired counter to having growing up feeling judged because of her learning disability. Many of the \u201cStudent Voices\u201d kids have worked through the obstacles they\u2019ve faced and are experiencing a turnaround in their lives and grades; others are still looking for solutions \u2013 and that\u2019s also an important message to send.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re sharing their most private and personal stories,\u201d Anfinson said, and in doing so, they\u2019re helping people inform their decisions about kids in similar circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the end of the day, graduating from high school is an intentional act\u201d for these students, Anfinson said. \u201cThey have to want it; they really have to intend to graduate.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nashville Public Television\u2019s \u201cStudent Voices\u201d videos are brief, but powerful because they feature high schoolers sharing their challenges and triumphs in their own words.
