Media Update: Geena Davis Leads Women and Girls in Nashville

Academy Award winning actress Geena Davis spent two days in Nashville this week promoting the work of the Women and Girls Lead public media campaign, Nashville Public Television, the Geena Davis Institute for Gender in the Media and the  Andrews Institute of Civic Leadership at Lipscomb University. Wednesday featured a online-only social screening of War Redefined with Davis as a guest panelist, and the night featured a reception at the lovely Green Hills home of NPT board member Frank and Gwen Gordon with board members, luminaries and invited guests. Thursday was spent at the Andrews Institute of Civic Leadership at Lipscomb University for a special “A League of Their Own” event. It included a coffee reception, luncheon, remarks from Andrews Institute’s executive director Linda Peek Schact, NPT president and CEO Beth Curley, former FCC Commissioner Debi Taylor Tate, now co-chair of the Healthy MEdia Commision, and a keynote from Davis. Following the keynote, Tate moderated a panel discussion with Davis, Curley, and the female heads of some of Nashville’s biggest media companies: Doreen Wade (WSMV); Carol Hudler (The Tennessean); Deborah McDermott (Young Broadcasting); Debbie Turner (NewsChannel 5); and Kate Herman (Nashville Business Journal). The day wrapped up with Davis introducing a special 20th anniversary screening of A League of Their Own for more than 100 Lipscomb Middle School students.
