NPT Welcomes Reporter LaTonya Turner to our Staff

LaTonya Turner

NPT is pleased to welcome reporter LaTonya Turner to our staff. Turner joins us as part of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s Local Journalism Collaborative Project. She will create video, audio and web reports on education in collaboration with Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) and stations in Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana.  She will also continue her work on the NPT Reports: Children’s Health Crisis project, from where many of you may recognize her, including hosting our panel discussions and Health Updates.

Turner is a broadcast journalist and producer who lives in Nashville and brings with her  more than 15 years of experience in broadcast news, first in her home state of Louisiana then in Nashville for WSMV-TV as a reporter and anchor. She left television news in 2004 to develop a career as an independent producer, specializing in historical and entertainment features and documentaries.  During that time, she also worked with NPT providing on-air and voiceover talent for Next Door Neighbors: Little Kurdistan and, most recently, Children’s Health Crisis.

Turner’s work in consumer investigations and in-depth reporting has won several regional Emmys and been recognized nationally by professional journalists and telecommunications organizations, including the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), the regional Edward R. Murrow Award, and the National  Association of  Telecommunications Officers and Advisors (NATOA).

She is also a successful theatrical producer of local stage works, including January’s  presentation of A Raisin in the Sun by Circle Players. LaTonya’s previous productions of note include  Jekyll and Hyde, Fame, and the upcoming all-youth show, 13 the Musical, which is set to open in April. As a volunteer, LaTonya has served on the boards of Nashville Cares, Abintra Montessori School, Circle Players Theater, and the Keep Tennessee Beautiful Advisory Board.  She believes her most important production is her family: husband, Anthony Riley, two sons — Marshall and Marcus — and daughter, Maya.

Welcome, LaTonya!

Hi LaTonya, I just have to tell you that I just watched your show about children’s health. It was great. It inspired me to do something about an issue that I have with our school lunches: offering elementary school students the option to add chips or cookie or ice-cream to their lunch. I eat often at the table with students. They predominantly get and eat the junk food and throw away their meal. So, I am going to pursue that these additional offerings be no longer offered. Thanks for what you are doing!

I JUST finished watching the Jefferson Street Documentary. what a great history lesson. i am apart of National Organization of Minority Architects here in Nashville and would love to see if Latonya would be open to talking to our group. that is a wonderful documentary and thank you

We’re glad you enjoyed Facing North: Jefferson Street, Nashville. Your message has been passed along to LaTonya, standby to hear from her directly.
