SYLVIA HYMAN ON SYLVIA HYMAN

Several art exhIbitions at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts close this Sunday, October 7. Most notable is Sylvia Hyman: Fictional Clay, which showcases the meticulously crafted trompe l’oeil sculptures created over the last eight years by Nashville’s renowned clay artist. Back in July, in advance of our airing of the documentary Sylvia Hyman: Eternal Wonder, we posted an essay here on the blog that centered around the exhibit. Imagine our surprise a couple of weeks ago when Hyman (via her daughter) responded to the post. I was pleased to know that she was reading the blog, and grateful that she would take the time to respond. Npt Media Update Arts Correspondent Daniel Tidwell then responded as well, creating a wonderful exchange on the difference — or if there’s a difference at all — between art and craft. It’s also an interesting foray into the sometimes murky area where an artist’s intention and a viewer’s interpretation meet. It’s rare to hear an artist respond to criticism. Give at a read; scroll down for Hyman’s response; Tidwell’s response; and get down to the Frist before Sunday.
