Gardeners: Let`s Do Our Part to Conserve Water

Julie Berbiglia, Volunteer Gardener producer and outreach coordinator for Metro Water Services, has a special message about water conservation, especially for her fellow gardeners:

Metro Water Services and Mayor Karl Dean are asking all of us to conserve water. Gardeners, let’s do our part! Please turn off all irrigation systems, and please do not water your lawn, garden or potted plants at this time.

Remember, the water coming out of your faucet is treated drinking water. If we limit our water use to drinking and food preparation there will be plenty of clean, safe water for everyone.

We understand that as people are able to return to their homes after being evacuated, clean up is a priority but we ask that they limit water to essential uses. Whenever possible use cleaning supplies that don’t require additional water, such as disposable cleaning wipes, cleaning sprays and disinfectants. Wipe down lawn furniture and other items instead of using a hose. Do not pressure wash.

Flood water being pumped out of homes and/or businesses should be done in a manner that will not negatively impact neighbors. Before pumping, assess the area and attempt to pump water into the stormwater system such as a ditch or stormdrain. If water can not be pumped into the storm system, direct it toward a grassy area away from downhill structures.

If you are in a flood affected area, please contact Metro Water Services at 862-4505 and we will try to find assistance that does not impact the drinking water supply.
